Primary and secondary education
Primary and secondary education across Australia is basically the same, with only minor differences between states and territories.
Primary and secondary education is compulsory between the ages of six and sixteen (Year 1 to Year 9 or 10).
School education is 13 years and divided into:
- Elementary school – 7 or 8 years, from kindergarten/preschool to 6th or 7th grade.
- Middle school – 3 or 4 years, 7-10 or 8-10 grade.
- High school – 2 years, 11th and 12th grade.
Test scores are usually Percentile Ranking in Australia, except Queensland, with a full score of 100 and an interval of 0.05. Each colleges will draw a minimum score every year, and students who reach the minimum have a chance to be admitted to the university they are applying for.
Some majors have requirements for preparatory courses, and some majors will draw the minimum line of professional courses, and each major will select candidates through different methods such as questionnaire and interviews on the basis of the minimum line. After all the selection conditions are met, candidates can receive the university admission letter.
Unlike China, the college entrance examination score is not the only criterion to determine the advancement of high school graduates. Usually, this score only accounts for a part of the total score, and the other part of the score comes from the students’ usual scores, mainly the grades of 11 and 12 .
